W. A. Mozart - Piano Quartet KV 478

J. Brahms - Piano Quartet op. 26

Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G from 1785 was initially not very successful. An important reason was that the work placed extremely high technical demands on the performers. It was later rightly recognized as a unique masterpiece and became a model for piano quartets of the Romantic era.

Brahms’s Second Piano Quartet experienced the opposite: it was immediately successful and, during his lifetime, his most frequently performed piano quartet. In the twentieth century, however, it unfortunately fell somewhat into obscurity. It is a pastoral and lyrical work, full of Schubertian influences.
