Manuel de Falla 3
Synagoge, Groningen
23 July at 20:15 hour
M. de Falla – Fantasia Baetica
R. Gerhard – Piano Trio
A. Schoenberg – Verklärte Nacht
In this final concert, marking the 150th anniversary of Manuel de Falla (1876–1946), his most impressive work for piano, Fantasia Baetica, is featured on the program. It is raw, thunderous, and entirely based on flamenco rhythms and harmonies. It has become an iconic piece in 20th-century Spanish piano literature.
The piano trio by his close friend Robert Gerhard provides a fine contrast. Gerhard, in turn, was friends with Arnold Schoenberg and invited him to visit Barcelona and become acquainted with Spanish musical culture. The version for piano trio of Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht demonstrates the diversity of European musical culture at the beginning of the 20th century.
Before the concert, you can dine at Restaurant Naud. This arrangement, including drinks, starts at 5:30 PM.
