250 years ago, the American Declaration of Independence was written. In the years that followed, an independent American culture gradually developed in the arts as well. American classical music has conquered the world with composers such as George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein. Unfortunately, this has been far less true for their female counterparts, who have largely remained unknown beyond the country’s borders. It is high time for a program dedicated to three strong, independent female pioneers of American music, featuring works by Marion Bauer, Florence Price, and Amy Beach.
