This program focuses on Princess Amalia of Saxony (1794–1870), a composer and librettist whose work has largely been overlooked. As the daughter of Crown Prince Maximilian of Saxony and sister of Queen Maria Josefa of Spain, she moved between various European cultural worlds. She studied with Carl Maria von Weber and wrote operas and their accompanying libretti, which were primarily performed in court circles.
The program follows the journey she made with her father in 1824–1825 from Saxony to Spain, via Italy and France, as recorded in her travel diary and in contemporary press accounts. Drawing on these sources, the concert evokes the musical world she encountered there.
