Lotus de Vries
Lotus de Vries is the principal violist of Phion Orchestra. She obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin, respectively, where she studied with Tabea Zimmermann, Florian Peelman, and Francien Schatborn. From 2022 to 2024, she was part of the orchestra academy of the Staatskapelle Berlin.
In addition to her orchestral work, Lotus has a great passion for chamber music. She has performed at, among others, the Schleswig Holstein Festival, in the Pierre Boulez Saal, the Gustav Mahler Academy, Musethica, the Grachtenfestival Amsterdam, the International Chamber Music Festival Utrecht, the Grandhôtel Chamber Sessions, and the String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam. In doing so, she collaborated with renowned musicians such as Lorenza Borrani, Eckart Runge, Stefan Arzberger, Olivier Patey, Johannes Meissl, Shirley Brill, Nikita Boriso-Glebsky, Jiyoon Lee, Karin Strobos, and Thomas Guggeis.
Lotus is regularly invited as a guest player with ensembles such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Residentie Orkest, the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. She has performed under the direction of conductors including Bernard Haitink, Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, Antonio Pappano, Lahav Shani, Pablo Heras Casado, Lorenzo Viotti, Jaap van Zweden, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Semyon Bychkov, Paavo Järvi, and many others.
Lotus has received multiple scholarships and is a laureate of the Princess Christina Competition. Her former string quartet, the Helikon Quartet, won the Kersjes String Quartet Scholarship in 2020. With this ensemble, she performed in venues such as the Concertgebouw, TivoliVredenburg, and the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, and released two CDs. She has also appeared multiple times as a soloist and in chamber music formations on programs such as Podium Klassiek and on Radio 4.
