Shostakovich, who passed away 50 years ago, was a firm believer in the unifying power of music. He became one of the most important composers of the 20th century thanks to his unique style and, above all, his fifteen groundbreaking symphonies.

Throughout his life, he frequently clashed with the authorities in Moscow. During the Stalinist era, he often had to navigate between the demands of the central regime and his own artistic desires. Only after Stalin's death in 1953 was he able to express himself more freely in his music.

This is a portrait of a unique composer who chose not to flee. Tonight’s program includes, among other works, the grand and compelling Piano Quintet.
