Ukraine has often had to fight for its independence throughout its history. The country also suffered greatly during World War II and under Stalin’s reign of terror. Vsevolod Zaderatsky was one of the victims of the latter. In 1937, he was arrested for “propagating fascist music” and exiled to a Siberian labor camp, where he composed 24 impressive preludes and fugues—fifteen years before Shostakovich would write his own cycle.
In 1942, Borys Lyatoshynsky composed his grand Ukrainian Quintet, Op. 42, a tribute to his country and people. Valentin Silvestrov, a student of Lyatoshynsky, fled to Berlin in 2022 following the Russian invasion. The dramatic Maydan Fresco by Yevhen Stankovych will also be performed.
