With the birth of opera in the early seventeenth century, we also see the rise of instrumental music. In the Renaissance, the vast majority of music was originally vocal, with other instruments doubling or replacing a voice.
However, now composers began to create music that took advantage of the specific (technical) possibilities offered by a particular instrument. All of this, of course, with the typically Baroque stylistic features of contrast and drama.
