Maurice Ravel was born 150 years ago. Alongside Claude Debussy, he grew to become one of the greatest and most renowned French composers. Although Ravel’s musical style is typically French, music from other countries had just as much influence on his compositions. From birth, he developed a love for Spanish music due to his mother’s Basque heritage.
Ravel developed a colorful and almost fairytale-like musical style. His fascination with the exotic, ancient French music, and the sound world of his colleague Claude Debussy is clearly reflected in his work. This program centers around his unique string quartet and the impressive sonata for violin and cello.
