Maurice Ravel was born 150 years ago. Alongside Claude Debussy, he became one of the greatest and most renowned French composers. Although Ravel’s musical style is distinctly French, music from other countries had just as much influence on his compositions. From birth, he developed a love for Spanish music due to his mother’s Basque heritage.
Ravel developed a colorful and almost fairy-tale-like musical style. His fascination with the exotic, ancient French music, and the sound world of his colleague Claude Debussy is clearly reflected in his work.
This program features the moving suite Le Tombeau de Couperin, dedicated to friends who died in World War I, as well as works by his students.
